I know we left our house at 4am on Monday, February 28.
I know we arrived in Beijing at 12:02 am on Wednesday, March 2.
WHAT happened to my Tuesday? I can trace all of Monday to the plane, and part of Tuesday. But the rest of Tuesday? POOF. Traveling into the future is freaky.
Our trip didn't start off well - almost two hours on the tarmac waiting for the lightning storm to pass (lightning storm? in February? in Pittsburgh?). By the time we boarded our flight to Tokyo, we thought we'd had our fair share of delayed-plane-ju-ju. See how happy and optimistic we looked?
THREE HOURS LATER, we finally pulled away from the gate. Seems there was a slight issue with the fuel tanks - enough to summon a scary amount of emergency vehicles to the tarmac while we all sat inside. Awesome. However, John and I clearly (VERY clearly) made the right choice to splurge on the business class seats because my sanity would have been shredded by the time that wait was over had I not had free champagne and a very comfortable seat.
By the hair of our chinny-chin-chins we just made our flight to Beijing. We were all sad to miss sushi during our Tokyo layover, but the plane meals totally made up for that. I had yummy sushi and other unidentifiable things on my dinner, and Miss O had the most awesome bento-type dinner, ever. They made an airplane out of rice and eggs and broccoli. Most impressive.
We are at Hotel G and I'm currently deciding whether I want the Grumpy pillow (mmm... buckwheat) the Gaily pillow (laurel-blossom) or the Glamorous pillow (silk!) from the -- I kid you not -- pillow menu. This morning Miss O and I had our first experience at a Chinese bank changing money and this afternoon we're heading to the Summer Palace.
