For as sweet and giggly as Beatrix Nan Yu can be, she has what Olivia coined The Thundercloud Face. It's pure I AM GOING TO MAKE YOU PAY IF I DON'T GET WHAT I WANT. It's probably wrong to laugh at that face, huh? Yet it's so freaking dramatic that it just cracks me up. Her whole little face gets all frowny and she just radiates shrankiness from every pore.
She had The Thundercloud Face today as I was trying to read to her and Olivia. I don't think she's really been read to, and she doesn't quite understand the concept of listening to the words and looking at the pictures - she just frantically flips through the pages then tosses the book aside. Today I pulled Olivia on my lap and read her Owl Babies, with Beatrix Nan Yu trying to rip the book out of my hands the entire time.
Thankfully I'm (just barely) stronger than she is. I won the tug of war and continued reading. She relaxed a bit but was still way more interested in trying to turn the page than in listening or looking.
When I finished, Liv got up and returned to her own chair and her Kindle. Two seconds later, Beatrix Nan Yu backed herself up into my lap, sat down, and handed me the book.
Granted, we turned the pages reallyreallyreallyreally fast, but it's a start, right?
(Also, yay for Olivia who was graciously willing to be my behavior model.)
